Supporting Family Togetherness - The Cottages Senior Living

Austin, Texas, Sep 16, 2020 - The Cottages Senior Living in Texas supports families remaining a part of the lives of their loved ones in assisted living, even if from afar. Staying connected with your loved one living with Alzheimer’s or dementia in assisted living is possible. Thanks to technology, both old and new, there are many ways to have regular contact with your loved one.

Video messaging apps are a great way to stay in touch. There are many apps available for this service from Facetime to Zoom. Spending time with a loved one via a video app can be an enriching and enjoyable experience for both parties involved. When you speak with your loved one in assisted living via video, don’t be afraid to get creative. Use the opportunity to show them family members, old picture albums or places they like to visit. Even if your loved one isn’t feeling chatty, checking in with them face-to-face can be a pleasant experience.

Mail your loved one something via the postal service. Send your loved one letters, cardsor small gifts. Our caregivers at The Cottages offer individual, personalized care and would be happy to read any letters or cards sent to your loved one. Feel free to include any pictures or keepsakes that you think your loved one may enjoy. A new hat in the winter or a set of comfy pajamas is a lasting, tangible reminder that you care.

Give your loved one the gift of music. Music is extremely therapeutic. Purchase an MP3 player and fill it with music for your loved one. Include on the playlist artists and genres they love. Personal messages from your family can also be recorded and added to the playlist. Consider including a set of headphones or small speakers with this gift to ensure your loved one can enjoy it right away. Listening to songs from the past or soothing songs from the present may provide a very calming experience for your loved one.

Ask your assisted living facility what additional options are available for visiting your loved one. Some memory care communities can accommodate in person visits while practicing safe social distancing.

Any way you choose to connect with your loved one living with Alzheimer’s, dementia or other memory disorders in assisted living, The Cottages is here to support and assist in that process.
