Actor-artist-historian, Bob Snead has spent a lifetime studying the brave struggles of the most overlooked soldiers ever to wear the United States Army uniform- the "Buffalo Soldiers".
Born George Robert Snead in Charlotte, North Carolina in January 1936, his art and drama careers
began in the school system and progressed as he traveled throughout the world. Determination and
success led him to study at the Chouinard Art institute in Los Angeles, California, the University
of Mainz in Mainz, Germany, under the personal tutelage of the late O.A. Williams of Charlotte
and Dr. Wolfgang Braun of West Germany. Snead also studied with noted Italian impressionist,
A successful cartoonist of military and political life, Snead has shown keen insight into these two
aspects of our society. His deft pen and wit raised the ire of many a politician and general alike.
Although his name may not be a household word to the readers of more well known tabloids, his
works have been appreciated by millions...and he likes it that way.
A retired veteran of 30 years of military service as a decorated dual-rated pilot, Snead earned 41
air medals, three Purple Hearts, three Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star medals, two
Bronze Stars with V Devices, the Combat Infantry badge, and the Master Aviator badge.
In addition to his accomplishments as a cartoonist and artist, Bob Snead has taken his story of the
"Buffalo Soldiers" to the stage. As an actor, Snead brings to life an unusual one act play, the life
and times of Lt. Henry Ossian Flipper, the first black graduate of the United States Military
Academy (West Point).
One of Snead's recent works was "The Legacy: Lest We Forget", a commemorative painting
honoring the dedication of the Buffalo Solider Monument at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The Errand of Cpl. Ross, a painting of Snead, was used as the model for the Buffalo Solider Statue at
the Robert Lee Gate at Fort Bliss.
February 2004, Gov. Rick Perry appointed Snead to the Texas Commission on the Arts for a 6 year
term. As Commissioner, Snead is an advocate for art projects and programs throughout the
state-to include the funding of art education through grants.
Despite all of his accomplishments, most days you will find Snead at the Frame Workshop. His
goal is to make sure photos, posters and fine art are displayed in the most expressive and artistic
manner through fine custom framing.
