What are the top causes of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs)
1/17/2022
Here is what you should know about traumatic brain injuries, how it occurs, the top causes and types of them, and more in detail.

When there is a blow in the head, traumatic brain injuries can occur. The damage can be both penetrating and non-penetrating.

Penetrating is a gunshot wound or something similar to it. Non-penetrating is being struck in the head after a car collision. Traumatic brain injuries have different impacts and severity than other patients. Many people recover from the damage within a few days.

Some people go through treatment and proper care to recover. However, older people are claimed to go through TBI conditions more. The reason is losing balance often, falling, tripping, etc. The chances of TBI can happen with anyone or any gender.

  • Athletes (both recreational and professional)

  • Construction workers.

  • Military members.

  • Police and law enforcement

These are people who are involved in challenging activities. They deal with everyday risks and threats—one of the reasons why the chances of going through traumatic brain injuries are higher.

What Can Traumatic Brain Injuries Make You Feel?

TBI usually occurs when there is a severe jolt or blow to the head. Or in significant cases, there is a head injury that penetrates and disrupts normal brain function. The head injury is followed up after an accident resulting in TBI.

The human brain design protects it from jolts and bumps. This protection occurs with the help of cerebrospinal fluid around it. The brain is secured at all costs, kept safe, and is floating in this fluid inside the skull.

A sudden blow or violent jolt to the head can do a lot of harm. It can push the brain against the inner wall of the skull. If this situation occurs, it can lead to the tearing of fibers.

Common causes of TBI

The types of traumatic brain injuries can result based on the causes of the damages.

  1. Falls:

You will be surprised to know that falling itself is responsible for 47 percent of reported cases. It usually happens in children aged up to 14 years and adults aged over 65 years. Children and aged people often don't have proper control over the balance. Tripping and falling can do a lot of damage to the head.

Especially when the falling impact directly on the head, it can result in TBI that can be mild to severe. Falling can occur at worksites too, with construction workers and other staff. The possible damage falling can cause to the brain ends up causing traumatic brain injuries.

  1. Motor vehicle accidents:

Fatal car crashes are unexpected, uncertain, and can bring a lot of complications. The motor vehicle cases themselves accounted for 14 percent of cases. And the most common age group to deal with TBI through vehicle collision is mainly in the 15 to 19-year age group.

When a car crash occurs, our body is moved into a compromising position. There can be a significant head shake that can shake the brain in the skull. Or, there can be a fatal hit on the head. Or head crashing onto something that can also cause traumatic brain injuries.

  1. Being struck by or colliding with an object:

Lastly, the remaining 15 percent of TBIs usually result from a collision. It is either through a moving or stationary object. When a person gets struck by something, usually in an accident or through any other means, a substantial hit in the head can shake the brain in the skull.

As it occurs, a concussion can turn out in the worst-case scenario to be TBI. The cases of this usually happen with people working in an unsafe environment. Falling of an object at a construction site, struck by a large object, etc., can impact the head and other body parts.

Traumatic brain injuries recovery stages for accidents depend upon how severe the injury is. If the damage is manageable, the recovery can be quick and vice versa.

Conclusion

If you are dealing with traumatic brain injuries, it is essential to know how to deal with them. Going to the doctor at the earliest is the only way to find out what to expect and how to handle yourself.
