“Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.” –C.S. Lewis
Many people fear getting older. What they don’t realize is that it is often the best time in life for many! Some Senior Citizens finally give themselves permission to be exactly who they are. This can be exciting and liberating. Older adults can often enjoy the simple pleasures that were often overlooked in other stages of their lives. Below are some myths about getting older.
There is a myth that Senior Citizens are set in their ways, and are not easily adaptable. Seniors may have strong opinions, but they have practiced adapting to new situations and circumstances their whole lives. If anything, Seniors are more adept at and welcome the possibilities of change, while still holding firmly onto their ideals and beliefs. Now, that’s wisdom.
The myth that Seniors have low libidos and do not enjoy sex is a misconception. According to Dr. Christiane Northrup, many Seniors are experiencing the best sex of their lives. Seniors with a willing partner, that are in physical health and of sound mind often participate in sex.
The myth that Senior Citizens no longer use their creativity is ridiculous. In fact, most Seniors reach their full creative potential later! The University of Chicago studied 300 famous artists, novelists and poets, and they concluded that their art improved with experience, therefore making their best work later in life.
The myth that Seniors are grumpy and depressed is false. In fact many well known studies suggest that older adults are the happiest than they have ever been! While this may not be true for all Seniors, what seems to be 100% accurate is that people who are generally good natured and happy typically remain this way through aging.
Believing in this ageist myth actually promotes brain decline. Stop believing it! Seniors may have slower reaction times than their younger counterparts, but what they lack for in speed, they make up for in accumulated knowledge. Seniors often have much greater vocabulary, problem solving abilities and communication skills from their life experiences. In addition, Seniors continue to improve their brain function well into older age, when they learn new skills that stretch their comfort zones.
The myth that all Seniors are sick and frail is completely demeaning and ageist. In fact, many Seniors are physically active and devote more time than they ever have to keeping in the best shape possible.
The myth that Seniors are unproductive and not worth hiring is a complete cultural stereotype. In fact, their knowledge and experience is often a great asset to organizations and companies. Seniors also contribute a great deal to volunteering and child rearing. Over 24 percent report engaging in volunteering after retirement, according to the 2013 Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The myth that Seniors are lonely is also a false notion. Later in life, Seniors often form the most meaningful and best relationships of their lives. Seniors do need opportunities to experience these relationships, which can happen by joining a club, getting involved in a senior center, worshipping at a religious institution or volunteering for a cause. In fact, Conservatory At Plano could be a great place to form these dear friendships!
