Irving, TX – September 30, 2020 - PET/CT of Las Colinas offers Amyloid PET scans for patients with Alzheimer’s disease. The Amyvid scan helps to detect Alzheimer’s disease by imaging the brain in adults. It evaluates them for Alzheimer’s disease as well as other ailments that are causing cognitive decline. Alzheimer’s disease affects the memory, thinking, and behavior of adults. People with cognitive decline tend to have decreased capability to think and form coherent choices and thoughts.
Amyvid is the only diagnostic PET tracer approved by the FDA to evaluate patients for Alzheimer’s or determine what’s causing the decline in their cognitive functioning. Amyvid serves an adjunct to all the other diagnostic evaluations. After intravenous injection, Amyvid binds to a protein (β-amyloid protein) in Alzheimer’s disease patients to identify neuritic plaques (amyloid plaques) in the brain cells. A PET scan can detect the radioactive signal from the abnormal clumps of brain cells and produce images of the plaques within the brain.
A positive Amyvid scan indicates the presence of moderate to frequent plaques but doesn't establish an Alzheimer's disease diagnosis. This is because the patient might be experiencing other types of neurologic conditions other than Alzheimer's disease. A negative scan indicates that the patient has light to zero neuritic plaques, which means the patient's cognitive impairment is not due to Alzheimer's disease.
An Amyvid scan is a quick procedure that takes about an hour. The patient doesn’t need to fast or change their daily medications. After an Amyvid injection, they will stay for about 30 to 50 minutes to allow the drug to bind in the brain before they get the actual scan, which takes only 10 minutes.
PET/CT of Las Colinas offers precise Amyvid scans using cutting edge technologies in a convenient location that is accessible to patients.
