The Latest Advancements for Colon Cancer Treatment
7/28/2020
A general scope on the latest treatment of colon cancer.

Southlake, Texas, July 28, 2020 - Colon cancer, otherwise known as colorectal cancer, is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. There’s a promising future for patients as there are treatment advancements in its early stages. In cancer care, doctors often work together to create a patient’s generaltreatment plan.

Colorectal cancer is cancer that develops in the colon or rectum. It usually starts as a growth on the inner lining of the colon called a polyp.  There are types of polyps which grow into cancer. If you have symptoms such as rectal bleeding, or bowel perforation, or even an abnormal screening test, your doctor will recommend exams to find the cause. If colorectal cancer is found, further testing, staging, and planning for the best course of treatment follows.

Below is an overview of what you can expect with colorectal cancer treatment.

Early detection
Colorectal cancer-related death rates have been dropping over the decades with the help of new and improved treatment equipment. It’s now possible to detect cancer during its early stages. It means that at the early stages, it has not yet spread to other parts of the body.  Late-stage metastatic colon cancer is much harder to treat.

Routine screening
With the help of new machines, colon cancer screenings, including colonoscopies, are easier and better. Your doctor can determine whether there are growths or polyps in your colon and whether they’re cancerous.

Other routine screenings with the help of equipment advancements include; virtual colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and fecal occult blood tests.

Minimally invasive surgeries
Surgical techniques have continued to improve for colon cancer treatments. For instance, according to research, using these techniques to remove polyps and malignant tissues during colorectal cancer surgery increases the likelihood ofasuccessful outcome.

Robotic surgery today is being used for colorectal surgery. It’s still under study for its efficacy. So far, there are no major drawbacks even though these surgeries require an expert surgeon and a well- trained surgical team.
