Cramping Leg Pain Doctors in Dallas: Treatment for PAD

Cramping leg pain doctors in Dallas talk about Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) and how it is treated.

According to cramping leg pain doctors in Dallas, one of the most common forms of cardiovascular disease is Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), a condition in which the arteries that carry blood to your head, organs, and limbs become narrowed by the buildup of arterial plaque, reducing blood flow to your extremities. Common symptoms of this reduced blood flow include cramping, feelings of heaviness, pain, and achiness in the legs, often experienced while exercising, climbing stairs, or walking. Many people ignore these symptoms, mistaking them for "signs of aging," but it's important to seek treatment because if they are caused by PAD they increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, and transient ischemic attack.

How is PAD diagnosed and treated at MTV IR?

Most patients we see have been diagnosed as having PAD by other doctors. In many cases the primary goal of this treatment has been to manage symptoms and to slow or stop the progression of atherosclerosis to reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke. In mild cases, this goal can sometimes be achieved via smoking cessation, exercise, and diet. And many more advanced cases of PAD can be controlled through the use of medications to lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels, control blood sugar, and prevent blood clots.

If a patient has been referred to some of the best interventional radiology doctors in Dallas at MTV IR, however, in most cases it is because the atherosclerosis that has narrowed their arteries has impaired their circulation sufficiently that they are experiencing leg pain even while at rest, and are having difficulty walking.

So the first thing we do is to perform a diagnostic angiogram, to get a closer look at the arteries supplying blood to the legs. If they are blocked, a number of possible interventions can be performed to open closed arteries and restore proper blood flow. One procedure that can do this is angioplasty, in which a tiny catheter is threaded through the blood vessels to the affected artery, where a tiny balloon attached to the tip of the catheter is inflated to flatten the plaque buildup and open the artery. In some cases, a wire-mesh stent is also inserted to hold the artery open once the balloon has been deflated and the catheter is withdrawn. In other cases, especially when the layers of plaque have hardened such that balloon angioplasty doesn't work, a procedure called atherectomy is used to shave the hardened plaque from the inside of the affected arteries and remove it.

These advanced interventional radiology procedures are a natural match for the talents of MTV IR doctors who have become well known for providing some of the best liver cancer treatment in Dallas.
