One area of medicine that often doesn't receive the same attention as others is the field of "Women's Health." For structural and hormonal reasons, women have to deal with a number of conditions and disorders that men do not. For many decades these conditions were underdiagnosed (because the majority of doctors were men) and undertreated (because traditional invasive surgery methods were not able to treat these conditions satisfactorily). Fortunately, the gentler, less invasive procedures made possible by interventional radiology (IR) have made treating and eliminating these disorders more possible and more effective.
What causes chronic pelvic pain?
Over one-third of the adult female population of the United States suffers from chronic pelvic pain. The causes of this pain range from relatively minor bladder and kidney infections to serious conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease, appendicitis, ovarian cysts, uterine cancer, endometriosis, and cervical cancer.
There are also two other common causes of pelvic pain that respond favorably to the advanced IR procedures we offer at our top pain management center in Fort Worth. The first is caused by uterine fibroids, a type of non-cancerous tumor that develops in the uterus. These fibroid growths affect 20-40% of all women over 35, and up to 80% of African-American women, and cause severe symptoms such as constant pelvic pressure, backaches, leg pain, constipation, and serious pain. The second type of pelvic pain we treat at MTV IR is caused by varices (swollen veins) in the ovarian veins and pelvic area, similar to varicose veins but forming internally within the pelvis. When these varices cause pain, the resulting condition is known as pelvic congestion syndrome.
IR treatments can eliminate both of these types of pelvic pain
The uterine fibroid treatment options in North Texas that we offer are based on a procedure called Uterine Fibroid Embolization, or UFE. This is a minimally-invasive technique in which the interventional radiologist inserts a tiny catheter into the femoral artery to the uterus, and then guides it using X-ray fluoroscopy to the location of the arteries that supply blood to the fibroid tumors. Then a solution of embolizing particles is released, which cuts off the blood flow to the fibroids, causing them to shrink and die. This procedure has provided 85-90% of our uterine fibroid patients with significant reduction of their symptoms.
Varices and pelvic congestion syndrome are treated using another minimally-invasive IR procedure in which a catheter is inserted into a large artery in the groin and then is guided into place using X-ray fluoroscopy. Then a contrast dye is injected to make the varices easier to see, and finally an embolizing agent is injected through the catheter to close the swollen and abnormal veins.
