Energy efficient appliances have been around for a long time and every year they are constantly getting more efficient at saving energy. Energy cost savings is extremely critical with heating and air conditioning units since they use most of the power that you consume every month.
A Little Background Info
Your system's energy efficiency is rated in SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) which is the amount of cooling (BTUs/hr) you get for each watt of power used. So, a modern day SEER 13 or better rated system will use half the energy of an older 1990 unit with a SEER rating of only 6 or 7: Here's some SEER examples showing the power usage:
