Raising Awareness of the Dangers of Carbon Monoxide

What is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon monoxide, or CO, is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause sudden illness and death.

Where is CO found?CO is found in combustion fumes, such as those produced by cars and trucks, small gasoline engines,
stoves, lanterns, burning charcoal and wood, and gas ranges and heating systems. CO from these
sources can build up in enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces. People and animals in these spaces can be
poisoned by breathing it.

What are the symptoms of CO poisoning? The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting,
chest pain, and confusion. High levels of CO inhalation can cause loss of consciousness and death.
Unless suspected, CO poisoning can be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms mimic other
illnesses. People who are sleeping or intoxicated can die from CO poisoning before ever experiencing

How does CO poisoning work?Red blood cells pick up CO quicker than they pick up oxygen. If
there is a lot of CO in the air, the body may replace oxygen in blood
with CO. This blocks oxygen from getting into the body, which can
damage tissues and result in death.

Bryan Texas Utilities Green Plus HVAC Rebate Program

College Station Utilities Energy Back II Rebate Program

Today's energy efficient air conditioners use as much as 40% less electricity than older
models. This reduced consumption results in major savings, with the same or greater levels of
comfort. If an air conditioning unit is 10 years or older it is likely an upgrade to a new more
efficient system will save money on your monthly electric bills.

BTU offer rebates to customers who install high efficiency HVAC equipment and do not require
you have an energy audit to qualify. Requires a minimum of 500 square feet per ton of air
conditioned space. Said another way; each ton must cool at least 500 square feet. For
example: if your home is 1800 square feet; a 3.5 ton or less would qualify for the rebate while
a 4 ton or higher would not.

The City of College Station is offering a cash rebate to customers who purchase
and install High Efficiency central air conditioners, air to air heat pumps, or
geothermal heat pumps in new or existing single family residential homes.

The Energy Back II Rebate HVAC replacements must be sized no more than
12,000 BTUs (1 Ton) for every 500 square feet of conditioned space. Any
variance in sizing must be first approved by the CSU Energy Department before
installation to remain eligible. Minimum SEER value is 14 SEER. Rebate dollar
amounts are as follows and apply only to replacements in existing homes.

heating and cooling tips of the month

Change your air filter regularlyCheck your filter every month, especially during heavy use months (winter and summer). If the filter looks dirty after a month, change it. At a minimum, change the filter every 3
months. A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool wasting energy. A clean filter will also prevent dust and dirt from
building up in the system leading to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure.

Dirty air filters can:1 - Reduce air flow in the building
2 - Cause dirt to accumulate on the fan blades, wasting your energy dollars
3 - Cause excessive dirt build-up inside the duct system, leading to mold or allergen problems in a building.
5 - Block the cooling coil itself with dirt, reducing system effectiveness and possibly leading to costly repairs
6 - Lead to frost build-up on the cooling coil and reduced or totally blocked air flow in the system
7 - Eventually permit dirt to bypass the filter where it soils and blocks the blower fan itself, leading to more costly repairs.

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ration)
SEER is most commonly used to measure the
efficiency of a central air conditioner. The higher
the SEER, the more efficient the system. SEER
measures how efficiently a cooling system will
operate over an entire season.

In technical terms, SEER is a measure of equipment
the total cooling of a central air conditioner or heat
pump (in Btu) during the normal cooling season as
compared to the total electric energy input (in
watt-hours) consumed during the same period

Typically the higher the SEER the higher the upfront
cost of the system which is mitigated by long term
