In Trans-Pecos Pronghorn Numbers
Initial results on stomach worm samples collected from pronghorns in 2009 indicated that the Trans-Pecos samples had six times more worms than the Panhandle samples. In the Trans-Pecos, average Haemonchus numbers per abomasum was 552, though it ranged from zero to 4080 worms per abomasum. Furthermore, they found that samples from the Marfa Plateau, the area deemed high priority, had the highest worm counts while samples from Jeff Davis County had the second highest worm loads. Samples from Culberson and Hudspeth counties, the area north of I-10, had much lower worm counts and were, in fact, closer to levels found in the Panhandle. They also discovered that the populations with the lowest fawn recruitment in 2010, based on TPWDs annual aerial pronghorn survey, also had samples with the highest worm counts documented from the disease sampling effort in 2009.
