Mosaics offer an age old alternative to the standard leaded glass technique. The above photo depicts the stained glass mosaic technique of laminating to clear plate, numerous pieces of stained glass of various textures and colors resulting in a realistic landscape scene. A really cool feature in this window is the waterfall made from broken tempered glass that was molded and epoxied into place. Adding small rocks and pebbles to the top and base of the waterfall further added to the dimension. This window has tremendous depth, a key element in a landscape scene.

The first impression of every home is almost always dictated by the entrance. Homebuilding experts suggest that a minimum of 1% of the home value should be applied to the entry. For this reason, leaded beveled glass entrances are normally an allotted feature in new construction. For existing homes, tremendous savings can be attained by retro-fitting new leaded glass into present openings as in the photo illustrated above. This unit originally had only clear plate glass in all seven openings. The change was dramatic.

The unit illustrated in the photo above is now the focal point in this family room and resolved the tremendous influx of light and heat that permeated the room every afternoon. The gold/clear antique seedy background glass allows for penetration of light, yet diffuses the intensity.

and did you know ?.........Stained glass is composed of silica sand with varying small amounts of iron, limestone, soda ash, and borax. The relative percentage of iron contained in the silica sand is one of the important variants in the glass making process. The different colors of stained glass are obtained by the addition of metal oxides to the basic glass materials. These minerals within the glass capture specific portions from the spectrum of white light allowing the human eye to see many various colors. Gold produces cranberry, cobalt makes blue, silver makes yellow and golds, while copper makes greens and red.
