President Roosevelt had a keen interest in the design of currency issued during his term in office. So when Dr. William S. Bigelow proposed sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, to design a new issue of $2.50 and $5.00 gold pieces, Roosevelt readily agreed. The new designs broke completely with past tradition of raised relief coins. Pratt, recommended the new gold coins be incuse with designs recessed into the metal rather than raised. The new obverse on the $2.50 and $5 gold coin featured an Indian Chief in a full-feathered headdress with the word Liberty and 13 stars around him and the date underneath. On the reverse, Pratt designed a beautiful, bald standing Eagle with the denomination and the standard legends of American currency. Minted 1908 - 1929
After careful consideration, the United States mint decided to borrow the design of the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin for the obverse of its new American Gold Eagle coin. The $20 Saint-Gaudens were first minted in 1907 and remained in general circulation until 1933. The design on the reverse of the Gold Eagle captures a bald eagle swooping into a nest holding its family, symbolizing many classic American concepts. The Miley Busiek design is surrounded by other information, including the amount of gold, its purity, and the stated face value of the US Eagle. The American Gold Eagle coin maintains a unique advantage over most other gold coins the United States government guarantees its gold content, weight, and purity. Introduced in 1986, American Gold Eagle coins are made only from gold mined in the United States.
