Courage. Loyalty. Honor. Service.
Many words come to mind when one thinks of a United States Marine. Most often, those words are positive, symbolic of the ideals universally held by Marines, and the "code" by which Marines try to lives their lives.
It is by that code which LCpl. Cody Stanley lived his life, and ultimately met his death. It is that spirit and more which will be honored during a fundraiser on Saturday at the American Legion Hall in Smithville.
The night, in honor of Stanley, has been entitled "CodyPalooza," a play on the name of the wildly-popular summer music festival Lollapalooza. The idea for evening of entertainment and fun was born of an agreement between Stanley's family and friends to get together once a year to celebrate his life.
That idea grew, and changed, and has now become a six-hour celebration with proceeds intended to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.
As a Marine, Stanley established himself with great valor, having been killed Oct. 28, 2009, in the Helmand Province in Afghanistan after sustaining injuries trying to rescue and recover several critically-wounded Marines.
Kicking off at 6 p.m. on Saturday, CodyPalooza will feature a live and silent auction, t-shirts and a variety of food. Additionally, door prizes will be given away all night long.
A dance will be held from 8 p.m. - midnight, featuring the Logan Tucker Band and the FM 1863 band.
During that time, a unique treat for the ladies will be a "Marine Dollar Dance," an opportunity to pay for a dance with a man in uniform.
At the time of Cody's funeral, his family decided to set up a special fund allowing those who wished to do so to donate to the Wounded Warriors Fund. According to an interview given to the Smithville Times, an outpouring of support from family members, friends and even strangers allowed the Stanley family to make a $10,000 donation to the Wounded Warrior Project by May 2010.
The Wounded Warrior Project is a non-partisan organization dedicated to assisting soldiers wounded in combat to heal, adjust and move forward with their lives.
According to their website, mission is to "foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded warriors in this nation's history."
It is an ideal that Stanley's family holds dear to their hearts, having spent time since last October maintaining contact with those injured Marines their son gave his life to save.
"Cody could have chosen to pursue several other opportunities after school, but passed on each to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps," his mother, Wendi Stanley said. "Cody is an American hero who gave his life so that others may enjoy the freedoms that we all hold so dear."
For additional information on the event or to make a donation, email Wendi Stanley at wendibob@peoplepc.com.
