THE NUMBER ONE ENEMY OF THE FINE PRINT
Thats how Joe Longley's skills have been referred to for over three decadesand not without good cause.
Joe Longleys devotion to consumer protection and insurance reform is well-documented and the results are on the record for all to see.
Back in 1973, as the twenty-nine year-old Chief of the Antitrust & Consumer Protection Division of the Texas Attorney Generals Office, he co-authored and nurtured the passage of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices-Consumer Protection Act, together with the private remedies sections of Article 21.21 of the Texas Insurance Code.
These laws have been hailed nationwide as some of the strongest consumer protection measures ever passed by any legislature, anywhere.
Since that time, his practice, both as a solo practitioner and as a partner in the firm of Longley & Maxwell, LLP (1979-2004), has focused on helping those victimized by consumer fraud and bad faith insurance practices. He has also found time to author numerous articles and seminar papers; teach insurance law as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas School of Law; edit Texas Insurance Law Online, an on-line subscription service, co-author Texas leading consumer law text, Texas Consumer Litigation, and serve his profession as a Director of the State Bar of Texas; a member of the District 9 Grievance Committee, and Chairman of the State Bars Consumer Law Section.
As a family-man, he also found time to coach Little League baseball, Pony League and Girls Basketball while helping raise his twin sons and daughter, Adam, Bill and Grace Ann.
In the year 2000, together with his law partner, Philip Maxwell, he was named to the Texas Lawyers exclusive list of 100 LEGAL LEGENDS. Then, in 2002, he was again honored by the Texas Lawyer by being named the Number One GO-TO-LAWYER for Insurance Law in the State of Texas.
In 2010, his law practice continues in Austin, Texas at 1609 Shoal Creek Boulevard where he has officed for the past twenty-five years-- just a few blocks from the pink granite Texas State Capitol Building.
