Sports Performance Philosophy
At SPI we provide the same services for both the recreational and the elite athlete. Our goal is to do more than just treat symptoms or merely tell you to cease exercising. Instead, recognizing the often complex nature of most injuries, we combine all of the services available to lay out a systematic plan to correct the cause of your injury educating and directing you with a program to preserve your conditioning while your injury heals.

At SPI we combine the latest technology with keen insight into fitness- and athletic-related injuries. Our staff is not only interested in athletes, they are athletes from marathoners to cyclists to triathletes.
Dr. Spears himself has been an avid runner bringing a level of unparalleled understanding to his expertise as an orthopedic surgeon specializing in the lower extremities. However, Dr. Spears expertise is not limited to the treatment of injuries of the lower extremities but also extends to the care of the entire body. In addition, we offer unique programs to guide all levels of athletes to achieving personal goals.

Please be aware that several changes have occurred with ALL Humana plans. Effective May 15, 2009, Humana no longer covered any DME that SPI would be prescribing. DME would be defined as braces, boots, slings, inserts, or any other medical equipment.
As of April 24, 2010, Humana has further changed their coverage regarding certain services.

MRI will not be covered when done the same day as any MD or PA visit.
Procedures/Injections will not be covered when done the same day as an office visit.
PT will not be covered same day as an MD or PA office visit

Effective as of March 16, 2009, some patients who are insured under certain Humana plans and who receive physical therapy in our clinic, Sports Performance International, may need to have those visits pre-authorized.
After scheduling and completing the initial PT evaluation, we would like for those patients to delay scheduling any future PT appointments until after our office has obtained a response of prior authorization for any further physical therapy visits. Please allow at least 3 days, and then if you haven’t heard back from our office regarding the status of the pre-authorization, feel free to call Brandy, our procedure/surgery scheduler,

Please be aware that if you choose not to delay scheduling any future PT sessions and proceed to receive care past that initial evaluation, the patient will be financially responsible for any charges accrued from those unauthorized PT visits.
Please be aware that it is your responsibility as a Humana insured to keep track of your appointments. SPI will not be responsible for appointments made that do not follow the above rules set forth by Humana.
