Your hormone balance affects your weight, your moods, your ability to handle stress and the way you will age.
Knowing your Family History and your Genetic make up is important and with sound nutrition you can change your odds of developing the degenerative disease of aging. Heart disease, Strokes, Arthritis, Alzheimers, Osteoporosis, Cancer and Adult onset Diabetes can all be prevented if you are willing to make dietary and lifestyle changes. If you already have these diseases you can vastly improve your health with sound nutritional practices.
Weight Gain and Obesity can affect both children and adults. We live in a more stressful and fast paced society today and this has an impact on the Adrenal Glands. The Adrenal glands are our glands that deal with the stress response. Adrenal Fatigue: weight gain and adrenal function are intricately connected. In response to stressful events the adrenal glands produce the stress hormone cortizol which is related to the hormone Adrenaline. If the levels of cortizol in the blood are too low (chronic stress response) or if corizol is too high (acute stress response) it can create a major weight gain, (fat) especially around the waist area, chest area and hips. The adrenal glands need special care and you can learn to eat specific foods and herbs that nourish the adrenals. Exercise, Yoga and Meditation practices done on a daily basis are great stress relievers. We need to pay attention to our stress response. (Sometimes it is not what you are eating but what is eating you.)
Carbohydrate Sensitivity often occurs when you eat too many of the refined carbohydrates and this sensitivity increase with age. This can lead to Insulin Resistance which is a precursor to adult onset Diabetes or Diabetes Type 2. The body produces too much insulin and the cells loose their ability to utilize carbohydrates for energy. Your blood sugar tends to rise, you are more fatigued and you gain more weight mostly around your waist and chest area.
Low Serotonin Levels: Serotonin is a chemical messenger secreted by the brain that affects your mood. When your serotonin level is balanced you feel wonderful you are full of energy, you feel comfortable, you feel great and you feel mentally sharp. Stress will often deplete the serotonin levels and that is why you will often crave sugars, ice cream, potatoes, bread or any other starch foods or sweets. When you eat these starchy foods you experience a brief elevation of serotonin and a brief relief and mood elevation but in a short time the food that you just ate, is turned into fat and the cravings start all over again. Persistent low levels of serotonin can lead to fatigue especially in the afternoon; late afternoon bouts of depression and compulsive starchy / sugary eating.
Candida Overgrowth: If you have an imbalance of the friendly bacteria and yeast in your colon you can experience weight gain or weight loss. You can have alternating bouts of constipation and diarrhea, symptoms of IBS, severe carbohydrate cravings and lots of gas, bloating and indigestion that keeps on reoccurring. Candida overgrowth is strongly related to the chemicals in our food and water, to eating too much junk food and too much fast food (highly refined foods).Eating too many sugary foods and the chronic over use of antibiotics. There is also a high incidence of Candida overgrowth in women taking birth control pills and standard HRT.
Indigestion and digestive difficulties: in the absence of any specific medical problems, many people still have many symptoms related to the inability to digest their food efficiently. You may have IBS or indigestion or the food "just sits there", this is often related to digestive enzyme deficiencies. People today seem to have more digestive issues which are related to eating too much refined food and not enough fresh raw fruits and vegetables. We get our enzymes from raw foods and most people just simply do not get enough of these foods in their diets.
