Awaken to the Power of Healing
Grief and loss, often called "The Journey into the Unknown," touch all of us at some point in our lives. Christ's ministry was about teaching us how to find resiliency through His Spirit and finding the ability to heal in difficult times.

Angela H. Caughlin, LCSW, is an author, psychotherapist/life coach, and speaker. She has worked in the non-profit sector and has also had a private practice for 18 years, working with individuals, groups and organizations as teacher and catalyst to help navigate change.

Angela is the author of the books, The Only Way Through, a personal grief memoir, and Journaling Your Way Through, a guided journal to help facilitate writing as a means of processing loss -- both published in 2006. Her new book, Journaling Through: Unleashing the Power of the Authentic Self, published in November 2009, acquaints the general public with journaling and shows how to discover the connections between the brain, the body and our own personal stories. In this new work, Caughlin draws upon the exciting breakthroughs in brain science and the impact of the journaling process on the body and the mind.

Angela frequently leads workshops incorporating the principles and benefits of journaling, intention setting and conceptual thinking as powerful tools to navigate change. In addition to speaking, Angela maintains a private counseling/life coaching practice and helps to manage the Transition Medicine Program at the Baylor College of Medicine. Angela resides in Houston where she enjoys her family, friends, traveling and yoga. For more information, visit www.angelacaughlin.com.

All are invited to meet on Wednesday evenings to share supper and a program, or attend Worship and a program. The theme for this fall season is "Jesus' Healing Ministry." Each week, a gifted speaker will present ways in which Jesus heals from a biblical perspective, as well as in our everyday lives today. Come and enjoy a Wonderful Wednesday evening!

Reservations are not required to attend our Wonderful Wednesdays event, nor are reservations required for child care. There is no charge for the program; Cafe St. Martin's dinner prices are charged for the meal.

Every parishioner is encouraged to become a part of a Sunday adult Christian Education offering. All classes meet Sundays, 10:15-11:00 AM, except when special events are scheduled.

Adult Confirmation Class (7-week course)
Basic Bible Study -- The Seven General Letters in the New Testament

Expanded descriptions, locations and weekly topics are listed below.

Activity Center, Upper Hall (west)
In this 7-week course, learn how the Episcopal Church is like other Christian churches and what makes our Anglican heritage unique. Discuss The Book of Common Prayer, the Sacraments, the Church's history and polity.

Room 207-209, Payne Education Center
The course is an eight-week, in-depth study of the seven General Letters following Hebrews in the New Testament. Written during the Apostolic period, between 45 AD and 90 AD, these letters offer an interesting insight into the early Christian community and the internal issues presented by false teachers, Gnosticism and the external influences facing believers which resulted in persecution.
This week: The Letter of Jude
These letters are often referred to as "Primers" or sermons of the first principles of Christianity and, in many cases, are as applicable to the Christian community today as then.

Vestry Conference Room
We continue our study of the book, History of the Episcopal Church, by Robert W. Pritchard.
This week: Chapter 3
Lively discussions regarding current events, while facing the challenges of everyday life, are the basis for our small group gathering. Weekly we navigate through a provocative and stimulating book which challenges our faith and how we come to understand and put into practice what we believe as Christians.

Activity Center, Aerobics Room
This week: Study on the Book of Romans, Chapters 10 & 11

This Bible Study will be traveling through the Book of Romans while surveying God's plan of salvation for all humankind.

You'll hear more about St. Martin's from our Lay Minister for Membership Services, and take a tour of The Church.

In the Eucharistic lectionary this fall, the focus is on the gospel of Luke, who stressed the call to discipleship. Luke approaches his writings through personal investigation and arrangement -- we are called to do no less on our journey with Christ. Luke reminds us that characteristics that exemplify discipleship are universality, prayer, joy and concern for the poor, all magnified by the power of the Holy Spirit.
This week's topic: Christ the King

Activity Center, Upper Hall (east)
If you think the name is fun and whimsical, then you've got an idea of the personality of this class. Come check us out!

Room 217, Payne Education Center
We are single, couples, married and with or without children. We "do life together" in Christian community. Please join us for in-depth Bible Study, a great network of friends and fellowship throughout the year.

Room 210-212, Payne Education Center
We are a steady group that gathers each week for spiritual development, fellowship, and a unified faith in Christ.

This group of Episcopalians over 50 follows a course of study based on the Revised Common Lectionary. They share Good News and host off-campus events.

Note: These groups will not meet on holidays or during Church campus closings. Please contact the group leader for updates.

Booksigning with the Rev. Dr. Russell J. Levenson, Jr., in honor of the release of his new book, "Preparing Room"
Are you ready for the season of Advent?

Join the Rev. Dr. Russell J. Levenson, Jr. on Sunday, November 21:

"Advent is the season where we turn once again to the beginning of the Christian story as it centers on Jesus. The pieces of this story come together not from one set of hands, but many - and they are not of one texture, but many. In these pages, I hope to offer several gifts: scriptures key to telling the story, a brief meditation, an avenue for "preparing room" and a prayer. This compilation is designed to carry one through the season of Advent. My offering here is to simply let the story speak to you ... to accept it and go along for the ride - at least for this season." -- the Rev. Dr. Russell J. Levenson, Jr.

For more information, contact Brittney Jacobson at 713/985-3821.

"Preparing Room includes powerfully beautiful prayers and quotes, many of which were new to me. Dr. Levenson is not only insightful and wise, but also humorous. He presents a realistic approach to biblical stories that other people often "dress-up" or sugarcoat. I highly recommend this book that provides both a compelling challenge and comfort for our benefit, while bidding us to open our hearts and lives to God." -- Ann Wilkinson Claypool, LCSW

"Dr. Levenson's Provoking Thoughts could be your best friend during Lent, a wise friend who cares about you enough not to leave you going your own way without thinking about it. Levenson's Lent turns around the Good News, above all. He conveys a sound, deep, thoughtful invitation to relationship or deeper relationship with the One who loved us and gave Himself for us. I look forward to Dr. Levenson's upcoming sequel, leading us through Advent." -- The Very Reverend Dr. William Stafford, Dean, St. Luke's School of Theology, Sewanee, Tennessee

"Russ Levenson wants faith to connect to living. His Lent book was a tour de force -- connected and powerful. I am sure that anyone reading and using this Advent book will find their walk a little bit closer to Jesus -- the one we anticipate this season." -- The Very Reverend Dr. Ian Markham, Dean, Virginia Theological Seminary

We have new "take-home" projects that can be stitched for the Church. Holy Strollers in December
Holy Strollers is a ministry of St. Martin's, providing a network of care for mothers of newborns to 5-year-olds, as well as expectant mothers. Moms within the parish family and from the greater Houston metro area are discovering this life-giving community. Through Christian spiritual guidance and education, activities such as play-dates, moms-night-outs, family picnics and lectures, Holy Strollers offers support in a casual environment...all the while having a heck of a good ol' time!

J. Pittman McGehee is an Episcopal priest and Jungian analyst in private practice in Houston. He is widely known as a lecturer and educator in the field of psychology and religion, as well as a published poet and essayist. He also happens to be a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Pittman's lecture and discussion will speak upon "The Archetype of THE GREAT MOTHER." C.G. Jung developed the concept of "archetypes," and Pittman will address how no human mother can ever attain the archetype, and must be satisfied to be a 'good enough' mother. (Childcare provided)
