Indian Pow Wow filled with colorful costumes By Kathy Olivarez The grand entry of the South Texas (Way South) Indian Pow Wow held Oct. 22-23 in McAllen was filled with colorful dances and Indians in costumes representing a variety of tribes across the United States. The pow wow was inter-tribal so members of Indian tribes from various tribes across the country participate with members of the host tribe, the Lipan Apache, who once roamed South and West Texas along with Northeastern Mexico.

Sandcastle Days held
The sunny weather and the promise of outstanding sand sculptures was a big draw as visitors vied for parking spaces as the 23rd annual Sandcastle Days and the Texas State Qualifying Competition for nationals was held Oct. 20-24 at South Padre Island. Approximately 24 professional sand sculptors from South Padre Island and around the world and a host of amateur sandcastle builders enjoyed four days of fun in the South Padre Island sun during the event.

Jack and Lois Hartman are current managers of Oleander Acres in Mission. They have been on the job for six years and have lived in the park for 12 years. They are originally from Lisbon, Ohio where they raised a family of five children. Lois worked for the postal system starting as a letter carrier, then manning a window and ending as a supervisor before retirement. Jack was a truck driver.
Oleander Acres Resort is one of the oldest Winter Texan parks in the Rio Grande Valley, having been started in 1964 by Joe and Dacia Carroll on farmland they owned with a total of 30 pads, which rented for $20 a month. In 1978 Ed Welliver bought the park, which he has now developed to have 350 spaces. Today the park is still owned by the Welliver family. Ed and his son, Seth, keep a close eye on operations. Lois says she and Jack like the fact the park is locally owned.

The Harlingen Community Band starts rehearsals on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. in the band hall of Harlingen High School South. Local Winter Texans are invited to join in and prepare for the concert season. The band hall entrance is located off the east parking lot. Call Alma Harris at 509-969-2817 for information.

Plung hopes one or more people from each of the Harlingen parks will decide to participate. Those who want to play will need a glove and correct recreational shoes for running. There will not be any sliding or physical contact while running bases. To avoid this, two sets of bases are used for first, second and third base.
There has been a slow pitch softball league in McAllen for a number of years that has been very successful. Plung wants to organize the same type of program for the Harlingen area.
