Western Communications is dedicated to providing the best communications through the use of state of the art equipment. Established in 1936, Western Communications has kept pace with the ever changing communications industry.
In 1936, Wilbur L. Anderson, an electronics inventor and technician, founded Western Radio to service broadcast radio and wind chargers in the Concho Valley. That was the beginning of Western Communications. That same year as a licensed amateur radio operator, he provided the city of San Angelo with its only contact with the outside world following a devastating flood. For three days, using his homemade transmitter and receiver, he secured needed supplies and assistance for the local residents. Ever since that time Service and Innovation have always been by-words at Western Communications. In 1938, eight years before the first Bell System mobile radio service was initiated, Western constructed and installed the first two-way system for the San Angelo Police Department. The size of those early homemade radios required that they be installed in the rear seat of the patrol cars. This created a problem only on New Year's Eve when an over abundance of intoxicated persons had to be transported to the Police Station while handcuffed to door posts and riding on the running boards.
As West Texas became a major energy producer in the late 1940's, a great need emerged for mobile and portable communications and Western established the first oil field related system. In the 1950's, Western became one of the first Radio Common Carriers in Texas, providing the Concho Valley with the earliest form of mobile telephones. In 1957 Western expanded its communications operations by establishing San Angelo's first cable television system.
Today, is no exception, Western continues to provide paging coverage in Texas and beyond, satellite internet for rural areas, satellite TV, and cell phone service thru major carriers.
