I hope everyone is safe after Hurricane Ike. I am working remotely from Tomball until I can return to my office in Galveston, but I am checking voice mails several times a day.
Texas taxpayers impacted by Hurricane Ike have an extended deadline of January 5, 2009 to pay 3rd quarter estimated taxes and file extended corporate or individual returns.
If you have a casualty loss resulting from Hurricane Ike, you may claim it on your 2008 or 2007 tax return. While claiming on your 2007 may provide a faster refund, you may want to estimate the amounts both ways as casualty losses are first reduced by $100 and then by 10% of Adjusted Gross Income. (For Hurricane Katrina and Rita, these limitations were waived. I will watch legislation for a similar waiver for Ike.) The Economic Stimulus plan has passed and is to be based on 2007 tax returns. You must file a tax return to receive the 2008 rebate check.
