The Animal Radiology Clinic was founded in 1980 to provide advanced medical imaging and radiation therapy for pets throughout northern Texas and adjacent states. Our goal was that pet owners would not have to travel to a far off veterinary college to obtain the services of a radiologist for their sick pet. We wanted to provide a place for pets to come for specialized imaging services and a local resource for veterinarians to have their own X-rays interpreted. Specially practices seem the norm now, but in 1980 there were only 5 radiologists in private practice in the United States.
We soon realized that pets with cancer needed access to the technology routinely available to humans with cancer. In 1984, at a time when less than half the veterinary schools had radiation therapy facilities, the Animal Radiology Clinic became the first private veterinary practice in the country to install radiation treatment equipment for pets with cancer.
In the late 1980's cats with overactive thyroid glands had only 2 treatment alternatives -- a lifetime of pills or risky surgery to remove the thyroid glands. The best treatment option was radioactive iodine (I -131), but regulatory agencies did not permit veterinarians in private practice to possess this radioactive material. The Animal Radiology Clinic worked for 2 years to get the regulations changed, and we have been using I 131 in our practice since 1989 to cure hyperthyroid cats, the first private practice in Texas to do so.
Others have copied what we do. But nobody else has been so motivated for your pet to break ground for pet health care in the way we have. We stuck our neck out when "they said it couldn't be done", and the Animal Radiology Clinic brought these services to you. Today, as part of the Veterinary Referral Center of North Texas, we remain the most trusted resource for radiological imaging and radiation treatment of pets in the North Texas area.
