A story no less amazing for its truth The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks tells the tale of how life is sustained in both laboratory and memory. Henrietta Lacks, an impoverished African-American mother of five died of a particularly cruel form of cancer at the age of 30 in 1951. Unknown to her or to her family a sample of her cancerous cells was taken before her death, a sample of cells which proved in their ability to survive to be an incomparable bonanza to scientists of the day, leading to amazing discoveries but at the same time causing much anguish to latter-day family members.
