Overview of Adult Chemical Dependency Programs

The Mission Vista Program at Laurel Ridge is a designed to treat adults with chemical dependence and/or substance abuse issues. We base our program on the philosophy that recovery is achievable for all who seek it. Through medical monitoring, combined with group, individual, and family therapy, we hope to encourage personal growth, have patient's accept responsibility for their recovery, and strengthen their positive self-esteem. Successful treatment of alcoholism and other drug addictions is rooted in the immersion of a 12-step program and solid counseling administered by a skilled, experienced, and empathic staff.
Treatment Program Modalities

Chemical Dependency Education Group
The goal of the chemical dependency education group is to provide a factual background regarding the nature of chemical dependency as well as its treatment. This is achieved in a didactic manner with the use of lectures, audio-visual material and written assignments. The content of these presentations is designed to instill awareness into the disease concept of addiction, recognizing and learning to cope with triggers to use, introducing 12-step philosophy and the importance of implementing a workable relapse prevention plan.
Chemical Dependency Process Group
Building on those topics of interest covered in the earlier chemical dependency education groups, the chemical dependency process group provides a forum for patient-centered discussion regarding how to implement sober coping skills into their lives. The group leader facilitates these discussions in a non-directive fashion to encourage the patient to take an active role in his or her recovery.
Psychological Process Group
With a recognition that substance abuse problems are often infused with all aspects of a patient's life including, but not limited to, emotional issues, family conflicts, and work stress, the psychological process group aims to highlight these auxiliary issues and their role as triggers to use. As with the chemical dependency process group, the psychological process group is patient centered with the group leader facilitating the interpersonal process in which group members understand each other from their own perspectives. Accordingly, patients are encouraged to actively explore and express more healthy ways to cope with psychological distress, family issues and work-related stress. An important key in addressing these issues is recognized as the practice of assertive communication styles.
Military Issues Group
Military issues group is a process group with the goal of fostering exploration and expression of the relationship between the patient's dual roles as an individual “in recovery” and their role as an active duty military member. Highlighted in this discussion will be those beliefs or behaviors and their origins that positively or negatively affect one's work, interpersonal relationships and/or self perception. This group also serves as a valuable primer for the very difficult 4th step in AA's twelve step program — specifically the formulation of a searching and fearless moral inventory of the self.
Chemical Dependency Family Education Group
Facilitated once a week, family members are invited to attend this didactic group with their loved ones. Families are likewise educated on the intricacies of addiction including the disease concept of addiction, their perhaps unperceived roles as enablers and the benefits of becoming involved in ALANON — the 12-step recovery program for the family members of those addicted.
Chemical Dependency Family Process Group
Immediately following and building on the prior discussion in the family education group, the chemical dependency process group provides a safe forum for the honest exchange between the patient and family members regarding the consequences of addiction. Family members and patients are encouraged to share feelings such as resentment, guilt, shame and forgiveness in the endeavor to achieve healing in the family system.

Facilitated by the Charge Nurse and/or Mental Health Technician, the community goals group aims to set a positive tone for the day's therapeutic programming. Unit rules and expectations are clarified, community issues are processed, a devotional is read and processed and each patient formulates a daily goal.

Facilitated by the Charge Nurse and/or Mental Health Technician, the Wrap-up group helps patients process the day's programming. Goals are reviewed and patients are encouraged to give each other feedback regarding progress in treatment.
12-step Support Group
Held in the evenings and facilitated by volunteers in recovery, Mission Vista hosts open 12-step meetings (AA, NA, CA). Patients are encouraged to participate in these meetings, thereby gaining an acquaintance with available support in the community. Patients are further encouraged to attain a temporary sponsor in these meetings.
Drug and Alcohol Detoxification
Detoxification is the process of safely getting drugs and alcohol out of your system and can be critical in overcoming an individual's addiction to Alcohol, Opiates and Prescription drugs. Abruptly stopping after a long period of abuse can be physically dangerous and should not be attempted without medical supervision. The consequences of drug and alcohol abuse and addition are chronic and potentially long term. Detoxification treatment includes medical support structures and the spiritual AA model. A range of new medications based on the result of genetic and neuroscience research involves taking doctor – prescribed medication, such as Suboxone, Subutex, and Disulfiram to help prevent relapse drinking.
