A Long History of Gold Coin Currency

Gold Coins are the most recognizable forms of currency around the world. Gold is a valuable source for money for many reasons. It can be traded easily. Gold is also easily transportable due to its high value to weight ratio as compared to silver. Gold can also be divided into smaller units, without destroying its value. Gold can be melted into ingots and re-coined. The density of gold is higher than other precious metals, making it difficult to counterfeit.
Egyptian Pharaohs commissioned the first gold coins around 2700 BC. These tokens varied in weight and purity, and were generally given as gifts not used as currency. By 630 BC the first gold coins with standard weight and purity went into circulation. By the 5th century BC the Chinese minted their own gold coins called the "Ying Yuan."
From this time on, gold coins enjoyed a long reign as the predominant means of currency. This lasted until the 20th century when in 1933 with the passage of the Emergency Banking Act, the president ordered all individuals and corporations in America to hand over their gold holdings to the federal government in exchange for an equivalent amount of paper currency. This ended the historical reign of gold currency.

Bullion Gold Coins and Variations

Any precious metal in bulk form is known as bullion, and is traded in the commodities market. Gold bullion can be cast into ingots (bars) or minted into coins. Bullion has a face value based on its mass, purity and the current price of gold. Although most gold coins are collected for numismatic value, there is still a large demand for the gold content of bullion. Most investors view these as a "hedge" against inflation; hedge meaning an attempt to offset price fluctuations within the gold market.
Gold bullion coins usually come in 1, 0.5, 0.25, 0.10 and 0.05 ounce sizes. Most countries have one design that remains constant each year, ours being the American Gold Eagle. Others (such as the Chinese Panda gold coins) have variations each year. A 0.10 oz. gold bullion coin is about the same size as a U.S. dime. A 1 oz. gold bullion coin is comparable to a U.S. half dollar.
