You havent lived if you havent experienced a broken promise made to you or have broken a promise you made. Every one of us has been on both sides of broken promises. No one it seems is exempt from promise failure. This is why trustworthiness is such a highly valued virtue because it is so rare. Most of the time we are more interested in justifying our promise breaking than learning promise keeping. Success
in school, work, friendships, and really all relationships depends on promises being made and kept. The problem is that we focus all of our attention on the promises we makeand breakwith each other. The source of learning real promise keeping is not with us promise breakers, but the ONE who never breaks a promise. God has been in a promise relationship with you since the beginning of time and God never breaks a promise. We call this promise relationship a ‘covenant’. To become a real promise keeper you have to be an active participant in the covenant God has extended to you. If that covenant doesn’t guide everything you do in life then you will always fail at keeping promises. If you are willing to admit it, chances are that you avoid thinking about Gods covenant because you dont want to think about the promises youve made (or should have made) with God and havent kept. The good news is that God not only doesnt break promises, but God never takes a promise or covenant back. Not only that, God is amazing in all the ways he pursues us with his covenant. In the weeks ahead we will be learning how to be in an active covenant with God and how that enables us to become true promise keepers. Pastor Jim begins this sermon series on October 10. We hope you will join us and take up the Faith Promise Keeper Challenge.
