WEST NILE IN THE BRAZOS VALLEY

Another Brazos County resident has contracted West Nile virus -- the second case reported this year and the 24th since officials started counting in 2003.
Brazos County Health Department officials said the illness was documented Tuesday, just over two weeks after the first local human case of 2008 was confirmed. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act prevents the health department from releasing information about a person who contracted the virus or where the mosquito bite might have occurred.
At least four mosquito pools in the region have tested positive for West Nile virus this year. The pools, tested at random by the Texas A&M University entomology department, were at the A&M golf course, on Morningside Drive and on Carter Creek Parkway in Bryan and on Summerglen Drive in College Station.
The health department cautions residents during the summer to drain standing water, to stay indoors around dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active, and to wear long sleeves and long pants when possible.
