Diversified Technique: Also known as States Manual Technique or the National Technique. This is the most common technique used by Chiropractors worldwide. This method involves a "Short Lever" thrust to the affected joint in the spine , and may result in cavitation. (The term given to the characteristic popping sound from a manipulation). There are several variations of this method which are differentiated more by the Diagnostic Analysis rather than the hands-on technique itself. Some variations include : Gonstead, Volkner, Upper Cervical, and the Spears Painless Cervical Method.**
Sacro-Occipital Technique: Most commonly known as S.O.T. This is a popular non- force method. (no popping) Specially designed triangular blocks are placed under the pelvis while the patient is face down on an adjusting table. They may be allowed to relax with some physical therapy treatment for several minutes before the doctor applies light reflex pressure to the problem areas of the spine. The patient will take deep breaths during the treatment to stimulate spinal fluid flow enhancing the deeply relaxing nature of the treatment. This is an excellent treatment for patients with Osteoporosis or severe Arthritis.
Logan Basic Method: This is another superb light force technique that is easier on fragile patients. The Doctor makes a light thumb contact on an area just below the buttocks known as the Sacrotuberous ligament . With the opposite hand he administers a light circular pressure to specific reflex points adjacent to the spine to achieve correction of segmental blockades between the vertebral joints. (Doctors who utilize this method are often the butt of light hearted jokes, by their colleagues .) All kidding aside, this is one of the best researched light force methods in the world!
Activator Method: The Doctor uses an adjusting tool known as an Activator. This is a rubber tipped stainless steel instrument that delivers a highly specific light force impact to reflex points on the spine or pelvis. Patients often affectionately call this the Thumper. Along with S.O.T and Logan , this technique is great for children, older adults, and post surgical patients.

I would like to say a few words about the Spears Painless Cervical Method. In 1984, I was privileged to study this remarkable technique with Dr. Leonard Boston. This method is by far the easiest Diversified Neck Technique for a patient to receive. No technique is perfect, and some patients are too "tense" for even this method, but I have had literally hundreds of patients tell me that this adjustment was the easiest cervical treatment they had ever experienced!
