KILLER DREADNOUGHTS! We're aplenty with outstanding dreadnoughts right now. Many people feel like the powerful dreadnought body shape is the first & last word in great acoustic guitars & we have several superlative examples. Martin, of course, invented the dreadnought & is therefore the benchmark, & the modern HD-28 sets the standard for quality, tone & feel. Try one out & see why. We also have Martin dreads worth considering, like the overlooked D-21 Special, HD16RLSH with enlarged sound hole for even greater projection, or HDC 16RE cutaway model that combines classic looks with state-of-the-art electronics. From the Santa Cruz Guitar Company we have a Vintage Artist model of sitka spruce & mahogany that is the epitome of elegance & understatement, brand new & sounding like a 60 year old guitar. Also o on hand are a VS ( Vintage Southerener, shown) & a VJ (Vintage Jumbo), which are slope-shoulder dreadnoughts, as they have come to be called. ToneRite "play-in device" is the gadget your guitarist needs who owns several or more acoustic guitars & none of them, consequently, gets played consisitently or played a lot. This prevents a fine guitar from sounding its' best. Great guitars sound best when they've been played regularly, over time allowing the instrument to develop & mature. The ToneRite accelerates that process by stimulating vibrational energy to your guitar or mandolin. It may sound like mysticism or smoke & mirrors, but it works. Great guitar makers like Bob Benedetto & Eric Schoenberg testify to the effectiveness of the ToneRite & we've seen & heard the results here in the store. $150.00

We strive to keep our website up to date, deleting items as they are sold & adding new stuff as it comes in. It is not, however, automatic & sometimes it will be a week before an item is listed or removed. If you see an item on our website that interests you, call or email us to be sure it's in stock. Or if you don't see something you're looking for, check to see if we may just have that very piece. We've got more variety & more good stuff than any other store in South Texas.
WE BEAT THEIR PRICES ON ALL IN STOCK INSTRUMENTS
The highest quality at the best price is what we're about at GUITAR TEX. Our goal has always been to get a great instrument in the hands of players who will use & enjoy them for many years to come. We have some familiar names like C. F. Martin & National Resophonic, to name a few. We also carry some less well known brands that we have found to offer exceptional quality & value like Reverend, Cole Clark, Bedell, & Santa Cruz Guitars, Weber mandolins, LoPrinzi ukuleles, & Gold Tone banjos. We have most recently added Heritage Guitars to our product line-up. Our knowledge, service, & expertise are unexcelled in San Antonio & South Texas.
REAL GUITARS. By that I mean that we sell guitars that are meant to be played, not just admired. We sell many guitars by smaller makers, custom made & one-of-a-kind instruments, higher end & limited edition Martins & such. But we're not a boutique that sells dreams & fantasies. We want to put the right guitar in the hands of the player who will get the most out of that particular instrument, allowing players to actually realize their dreams.
IMPROVE YOUR TONE!
LINDY FRALIN PICKUPS are known to be some of the finest, hand made replacement pickups in the world. We maintain a good selection of Fralin Pickups & those we don't have can be ordered & in stock in a matter of weeks.
JENSEN SPEAKERS. You know the name because they've been around since the beginning of guitar amplification. Today Jensen makes a wide variety of guitar amp speakers to suit any players needs. A great way to make to good amp sound even better is to upgrade your speaker(s). We stock a good selection of Jensen Speakers for guitarists. Call for availability.
ACOUSTIC GUITAR PICKUPS FROM SUNRISE, K & K, FISHMAN, & L R BAGGS. I won't play favorites here, because they all make great products & I use pickups by each of these makers on my own instruments. We would never reccomend a pickup installation in a classic vintage acoustic, but we have no qualms about installing a pickup on a nice Martin, Collings, Santa Cruz, etc. No holes cut in the side of your guitar for controls, but discrete & non-invasive volume/tone wheels inside the sound hole.
FISHMAN LOUDBOX MINI. 60 watts, 2 channels & under 20 lbs. AND under $300.00. Best of all, these things sound incredible
225 Parsons Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan. 310 Sycamore Street in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Without question, these are among the most revered guitar making addresses in America. Proudly, from both of these iconic addresses come some of the finest guitars in the world. At Guitar Tex we are humbly proud to continue the tradition of offering HERITAGE GUITARS, made by some of the same folks that made the great guitars from the "Golden Era" of electric guitars. And MARTIN GUITARS who practically created what great steel string acoustic guitars are all about & still make incredible & fine guitars today, sought after by great players worldwide. Richard Hoover's SANTA CRUZ GUITARS since 1976 have represented traditional luthiery at its' finest. At Guitar Tex we can show you guitars that illustrate just how good a guitar can be.
BEDELL GUITARS. You may not have heard of them yet, but if you pay attention to any guitar publications you will be seeing & hearing this name a lot in the very near future. Extremely high quality solid wood acoustics at extremely friendly prices. With an artist endorsement roster that includes Graham Nash, Stephen Stills. Amy Grant, Crystal Bowersox, Charlie Sexton, Patti Smith, & Kenny Loggins, you know that these are excellent guitars that perform to the highest standards.
If you've been wishing for a no-compromise acoustic that offers the look, feel, & tone of a high-end acoustic without the price tag that puts them out of reach for most players, then BEDELL GUITARS are for you. For example, an Orchestra Model MB-24G of solid cedar & solid Indian rosewood, gloss finish, ebony fingerboard & bridge, wood binding, gold Grover tuners, deluxe hard case. A delight to the eyes, ears, & hands. MSRP: $1,599.00 SALE: $1,195.00
From the same folks that make the Bedell Guitars come the Great Divide Guitars. We've looked long & hard, trying many different instruments before we found the GREAT DIVIDE GUITARS & decided that these will be our entry level for acoustic guitars. At a selling price that starts at $169.00, you'll find that GREAT DIVIDE guitars are loaded with quality features, fit & finish that exceed what we've come to expect at this price. In fact, instead of feeling like we're making a necessary compromise with our starter guitars, we can proudly offer a guitar that looks & sounds great with a good set-up right from the box.
BEDELL GUITARS & GREAT DIVIDE GUITARS: Tex says "Check 'em out".
1964 Gibson ES 335 cherry w/Bigsby. We got this from the original owner & it has been very well kept. Not unplayed, but excellent all original condition with "Patent" sticker (Not PAF) on the back of the pickups. Click over to the "Vintage Guitar" page for pics. I wouldn't mind doing some swapping for this one if you have something like an L-7CE or an L-4CE, perhaps a vintage Guild or Epiphone archtop. $15,000.00
ROC N' SOC Guitar throne. We've sold a lot of these guitar chairs since we opened & they hold up extremely well & provide the most comfortable seat available. They start with an oversized motorcyle seat, fully adjustable foot rest ring & back rest, hydraulic one touch height adjustable seat. Dense foam padding covered in velour fabric the Roc n' Soc throne makes for a handsome & useful addition to your music room & makes an excellent gift for the guitarist in your life. You'll find many Roc n' Soc stools on the internet, but not this model with the hydraulic seat adjustment, back rest & foot ring. The model that we sell is their most deluxe with all the bells & whistles. We've seen & tried all the guitar stools on the market & the Roc N' Soc shines, even compared to seats costing far more. A Roc N' Soc guitar throne is an ideal gift for the guitarist in your life. Boxed for easy packing & gift giving; assembly is simple & requires no tools & less than 5 minutes. Colors in stock: Black, Dark blue, and Grey. $289.00
What's the one thing that most every guitarist needs but doesn't have?
Answer: A "bottleneck" slide. In all types of music from blues, classic rock, Christian rock, country * bluegrass the bottleneck is a most useful little tool that can add just the right color to your sound when you need it.
We've got new slides by Mr. B's & Delta Sliders, for a hand made feel from a true bottle neck & not Pyrex like the big makers use. There's a huge difference in heft, tone, & feel.
For those with Dom Perignon taste & an Asti Spumante budget don't despair. While we don't have piles of cheapo "box" guitars for sale like the big stores, we do have some killer guitars from Blueridge, Loar, Aria, & Bedell that are mid-priced & will rival even some of the boutique makers. Check out the amazing, hand wired, all tube amps from VHT, whose Special 6 model is available as a 1X10" combo or as a separate head only for under $200.00. Boutique quality at a bargain price.
It's interesting that we frequently get players in from Dallas, Houston, Austin, Fort Worth & points beyond who make the comment that they don't have a store in their area like GUITAR TEX. After 11 years in San Antonio there are still some locals we have yet to meet.
We have cool stuff that no other store in the area has like the new magnetic resonator guitar pickup from National Resophonic, barely 3/16" thick & sounds better than anything I've heard so far. Or check out the new device from TONERITE that every owner of fine acoustic should consider.
Lately we've been seeing harmonica players from Austin & the Hill Country stopping in to try & buy new harmonicas from Suzuki & Seydel. We keep a good variety of diatonics on hand as well as a few chromatics & specialty harmonicas. We've made a commitment to harmonicas because the choices have been so limited locally. Since we have made this kind of commitment & since we are sponsors of The San Antonio Blues Society (which has many harpists in their memebership), it would be heartening to see more of the San Antonio & more local musicians stopping by to at least check them out. The Suzuki "Maniji" model & the Seydel "1847" series are world class harmonicas; the Suzuki Harpmaster & Bluesmaster models, as well the Seydel Blues series will outperform, last longer & sound better than many of the better known popular brands. And the modest Suzuki Folkmaster models are a far better beginner harp at $15.00 than others.
NEW SHIPMENT OF SUZUKI HARMONICAS JUST ARRIVED. Manji, Promaster, Bluesmaster, & Harpmaster models available in most popular keys.
TONERITE FOR GUITARS IS HERE & YOU NEED ONE IF YOU HAVE A FINE ACOUSTIC GUITAR. For many, many years classical violinists & string players have helped their instruments "break in" & age by placing them near stereo speakers with music playing. Guitarists can do the same thing with their acoustics, but it's not especially convenient or safe. Enter TONERITE: a simple device that safely attaches to your guitar top. Endorsed by great players & builders like Bob Benedetto & Eric Schoenberg & that's as good an endorsement as you could ask for. Basically it produces tones & allows the top to vibrate expediting the "play-in" time, ultimately making for a louder, more defined & refined sounding instrument. It works! $150.00 Several of our customers have suggested that we rent the TONERITE. At each suggestion, I mentioned that I thought that once players understood what the unit is about & how it works that they would choose to own one. But I gladly offered the unit for a one week rental. In each case they chose to buy the TONERITE instead of merely renting the unit. Now I'm down to the last one in stock, so it will NOT be offered for rental, but after this one sells we will get some more including at least one for mandolin. They make them for violin, ukulele, & cello, so if you need one for one of these instruments let us know & we'll get you one. If you have a fine, solid wood instrument you will be amazed at how well this product works to make sound even better- in some cases MUCH better.
L.R. BAGGS ANTHEM SL blender mic/pickup has finally arrived! Much touted & highly anticipated this new 2-way system lives up to the hype. Personally, I think it by far outperforms other blender systems where you can use the mic portion only very slightly to add some "air" to your plugged in sound. With the Anthem SL the mic is the primary source & by some miracle of technology is free of the unpleasant amibient noise that is so problematic with internal microphones. Mic mounts securely on the bridge plate inside the guitar, combined with the Element Active pickup under the saddle for a minimally invasive, stage ready, natural sounding sysytem. Instantly sets a new standard for great plugged in acoustic sound.
Check out the new National slimline resonator guitar pickup. Super thin humbucker pickup allows for either temporary or permanent mounting. $175.00
On the wall in the corner of the shop is a picture taken from the book LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST. In the picture is the Grateful Dead perfroming, with rock empresario Bill Graham standing behind the speakers playing the cowbell after having been famously "dosed" by their road manager. At the edge of the stage stands me with shoulder length hair keeping the audience from rushing the stage.
There are other pictures of me at 18 in 1969 playing at the Gaslight Cafe & recording at Vanguard Studios in NYC. This is mentioned just to point out that I've been in the trenches with music for a very long time.
Please take a few moments to peruse our website & see what we're up to. Better yet, stop in & pay us a visit. Mark & Gus will make you feel welcome. Luthier, John Thurston, does the repairs & is available for consultations during most business hours.
GUITAR TEX is now a sponsor for the SAN ANTONIO BLUES SOCIETY. We support them for their scholarship program & for keeping the blues alive is San Antonio & South Texas. We've had a long history of blues in this area beginning with some of the earliest recorded blues on the Bluebird label & including many of Robert Johnson's famous recordings.
GUITAR TEX is offering extra discounts on all strings & accessories to memeber of the SAN ANTONIO BLUES SOCIETY.
HERITAGE GUITARS!!!! Made in Kalamazoo Michigan in the old Gibson factory.
It's official folks. We've made the commitment to be the newest Dealer for Heritage Guitars. If you're not familiar with Heritage Guitars, you should know that Heritage Guitars was bought by former Gibson employees in 1984 after Gibson moved its operations to Nashville. Great electric guitars from the "Golden Era" were made in this very building at 225 Parsons Street in Kalamazoo Heritage guitars are made entirely by hand by a small, dedicated staff.
We are thrilled to be a dealer for a great American tradition of fine guitar making. The product line is limited to solid body set neck guitars, semi-hollow body, & fully carved archtop jazz guitars & the production numbers are small; you won't see them sold at big box stores. And you won't find a better quality guitar regardless of what name is on the headstock.
1st to arrive is an H-137 in cherry finish & it's a great guitar with a classic look & feel. I am convinced that the Jason Lollar P-90 pickups are the best & the good people at Heritage Guitars in Kalamazoo are making guitars that are instant classics. No artificial relic or distressed treatment here. Made to be played. If you love classic single cutaway guitars like this you definitely should try the H-137. Some of the folks making guitars at Heritage have been working in this factory since the 1950s & they know how to make great guitars like they did back then.
LAKOTA LEATHERS GUITAR & MANDOLIN STRAPS as worn by The Del McCoury Band. Hand made by Native Americans on The Pine Ridge Reservation & made from elk & buffalo. Wonderful, supple leather straps that look & feel broken in even when they're brand new. Play your instrument in style & comfort & providing much needed work to Americans who really need the work.
VOYAGE AIR GUITARS. The travel guitar to beat them all! Full size wooden guitars that sound & play great. When you're finished playing simply loosen the strap button bolt with your fingers, fold the neck neck over & pack your guitar away in a bag that's 1/2 the size of ordinary guitar bags. When you want to play again bring the neck back in position & secure the bolt & play; you don't even have to loosen the strings. Absolutely amazing, surprisingly affordable & available in San Antonio at GUITAR TEX. Honestly, I wouldn't have given these guitars a second glance if hadn't been for visitor Todd Hallawell, who had one to show off. Todd, being a truly outstanding fingerpicker & flat picker, got my attention right away as a player. Then he brought in his VOYAGE AIR guitar that he travels with, as well as for peerformance & recording.
VAD 1 all solid wood dreadnought with the same appointments as the OM1C above. Blow their minds at the bluegrass jams when you rip through some tunes, then casually & easily fold it half & pack ot away for easy toting & storage. Try this guitar against any other mahogany dreadnought & you'll immediately see & hear the quality. $1,355.00 w/travel case BUY Online
ARIA PRO II GUITARS. Many of us older guys know the Aria name for making extremely high quality & affordable guitars & basses since 1956. Played by great & historic players like Herb Ellis, Larry Coryell & Carol Kaye. Aria is still around & they still make terrific guitars. If you're wishing for a sweet carved archtop that will work as well acoustically as electrically, consider the gorgeous FA-77.
HARMONY THE PEOPLE'S GUITAR by Ron Rothman is now on sale at Guitar Tex. Covers the great years from 1945-1973. Virtually ever American guitarist who lived during those years owned a Harmony made guitar, be it an Airline, Silvertone, Truetone, or a myriad of other names. Back in the 1950s & 1960s my old guitar teacher, Roy Smeck, had signature model guitars, steel guitars, ukuleles & banjos made by Harmony, many of which are sought after & collectable today. There are 2 chapters covering his involvement with the Harmony company. Lots of great color pictures from this wonderful Chicago maker who made some the most stylish instruments of their day. You can't be a bonafide, well informed guitar geek without being up to speed on Harmony instruments. This is not a title that you will find in local bookstores or even other music stores. Available in San Antonio only at Guitar Tex. $20.00
PREMIER GUITAR MAGAZINE has awarded the COLE CLARK FL1 AC its highest ratings for acoustic guitars. We've got one in stock, so come & see what the buzz is all about & why great players like Jack Johnson & Ben Harper play them.
COLE CLARK ELECTRIC GUITARS! Much like their acoustics, they've taken a traditional style & totally redesigned it into something unique & wonderful. Visit the Cole Clark Guitars website at www.coleclarkguitars.com to see the lineup. Priced comparably to a nice USA made guitar with decidedly Australian touches. If there is any justice in the world of guitars, the Cole Clark electric guitars will be a huge success. Positively awesome guitars in a fairly traditional looking package but a closer look reveals a guitar that is anything but a clone of what we've seen so many times before. The Hollow Baby starts with an "S" type shape but it's made entirely of Australian bunya & it's hollowed out with a center block that is carved from the same piece of wood as the back! This has got to be the lightest wieght S style you've ever held & the result is an extremely musical chime unplugged. Plug it in & you hear unparallelled clarity. The 1940s era Paul Bigsby inspired 6-in-line headstock (preceded Fender) is just too cool to us guitar geeks, leaving us wondering why it took someone so long to use this design. Click over to our Cole Clark section for pictures of what's in stock.
visit www.theguitarhanger.com to see one of the best ideas for guitarists I've seen in a long time. Just what it sounds like it is; a hanger that fits on a closet post wherein your guitar gently & peacefully hangs. Away from the kids & pets; off the stand which can be an accident waiting to happpen; out of sight from pesky roomates & visitors you don't want handling your guitar. Every guitarist you know needs at least one.
Souldier Straps are what the well dressed guitarist is wearing today. These stylish hand made straps are so cool & they have fabrics & designs to appeal to every player. Truly a "cottage industry", Souldier is run by Jen & her brother in Chicago where the straps are made to order of recycled & NOS material. She's been good enough to design some ukulele straps at our request & they're the best. Mandolin & kids guitar straps are also winners.

We Love Trades. We know that in these tough times it's hard to come up with the funds for higher end guitars, mandolins, etc. If you have a used guitar or gear that you would like to trade for something we have in stock give us an email with pictures or bring your stuff in & we'll make an on-the-spot offer. We generally offer 75- 80% of what we might expect to get for your gear, which is more generous than other stores that take trades
Have you tried our GUITAR TEX phosphor bronze acoustic guitar strings? Marfa Lights .012-.054; Olmos Lights (hybrid light top/medium bottom) .012-.056; Texas Mediums .013-.056. We had these specially made & gauged for us by Curt Mangan Strings of Cortez, Colorado who makes some of the best strings in the world. We have many players who won't use any other strings.
Curt has now developed a proprietary method of coating strings that maintains the outstanding tone without any compromise & provides extended life. For the players who have disdain for other coated strings you've tried, you might just find that these are what you've been wishing for in a coated string.
Ray Wylie Hubbard's Roots & Branches show on New Braunfels Radio KNBT 92.1 FM every Tuesday from 7-9pm is now being sponsored by Guitar Tex. If you don't know the station or the show, you should definitely check them out. One of the highest rated Americana stations in the nation & their programming is definitely excellent; bluegrass, blues, classic country, singer-songwriter, Dylan to Doc Watson to Los Lonely Boys, Allison Krause, Robert Earl Keen & such. Great stuff. Ray Wylie is a jewel in the crown of Texas music & we're extremely pleased & proud of this affiliation. The show is broadcast live from Tavern In the Gruene in beautiful downtown Gruene, Texas.
BORN IN THE USA.
We're among the few retail businesses around where you'll find that a great majority of the products & merchandise we sell in made right here in America. While it is true many great musical intruments are made in Asia & other places overseas, we're pleased & proud that many, if not most, of the best instruments are still made in the USA. Today, more than ever, we feel it's important that what we sell keeps Americans working.
Personally I have no issues with foreign goods & I'm proud of all the products that we sell, foreign or domestic. But more than anything else, I'm extremely proud that what we sell here & what you buy here supports skilled American workers. In these troubled times isn't that important to you, too?
SANTA CRUZ GUITARS, C.F. MARTIN GUITARS, NATIONAL RESOPHONIC, WEBER MANDOLINS, LOPRINZI UKULELES. All great American makers, not mention that most of the strings & accesories we sell are also American made. Try a set of our acoustic house strings (Marfa Lights, Texas Mediums, or the bluegrass gauged Olmos lights) made by Curt Mangan in Colorado where he's become a local hero by providing employment in an otherwise economically depressed part of the state.
DAN CRARY CAPO. If you use a capo, you will surely love getting this, the finest capo I've ever seen. Even if you don't use a capo now this thing is so beautiful it could inspire them to start. The DC Capo comes in a jewelry box & packed with a velvet bag to keep it in. In fact it is rather like a piece of fine jewelry in that it is beautifully machined & polished in gold & is simply the most elegant & well designed capo. At $80.00 each it also may be the most expensive capo out there, but in the words of Dan Crary "The important thing isn't a better capo, it's better guitar music". Each one is carefully made & finished by hand in Oregon. These capos were sent to us directly from Mr. Crary himself for total assurance that the master has inspected & approved each one. Usually only available at his workshops or from the artist direct. You can see & buy the actual product here at Guitar Tex.
Dugain Picks. Hand made in France by Charles Dugain & used by some pretty good players like Eric Clapton, Bireli Lagrene, George Benson, Carlos Santana & others. The quest for tone could well stop right here. These are not like any other pick & they simply have to be tried to be appreciated. Thicker than almost any other pick but sculpted for your digits, Dugain picks have found favor among bluegrassers, rockers, Gypsy & jazz players. Made of wood, stone, bone, acetate, acrylic & horn, among other choices. The revelation is just how fast you can play with these unique plectrums. We also have some Dugains made from silver & gold for a special gift item.
SUNRISE PICKUPS ARE BACK IN STOCK! Completely hand made in California by Jim Kaufman. Only 1000 are made per year. The pickup of choice for Lyle Lovett, Pierre Bensusan & many others for trouble-free stage use.
sorry but we are sold out on Sunrise pickups until Feb. 2010.
LEFTY ALERT!!! We don't carry many lefties, but we just got in a lefty Reverend Flatrock model with a pair of Revtron pickups & a delicious orange finish. Now you can see for yourself just how exceptional a guitar Reverend makes.
LINDY FRALIN PICKUPS. If you're trying to get the classic sound with just the right sparkle, there are no better pickups than those made by Lindy Fralin. Completely hand wound to exacting specifications & attention to detail that results in a pickup that's as attractive to look at as it is to hear. We are keeping a selection in stock for most types of guitars & basses. We are happy to order anything we don't have in stock or pickups to your specifications.
MiSi Acoustic Instrument Pickups are something new & exciting that you'll be seeing a lot of in the future. An active acoustic pickup that require no battery & recharges in seconds & sounds fabulous.

I want to thank you for the kindness & service you gave to me the past couple of days. It is refreshing to walk into an establishment & be provided with a genuine smile & politeness. In this day of grudging service & phony smiles I sincerely appreciate your family style of service. I most definitely will tell my friends & family about you & your store.
